Two Week Ashtanga Intensive

with David Robson & Jelena Vesić

(in collaboration with Supersoul - accredited for GaiaYoga TT300 16+12+8 hr)

We are honoured to welcome for the third time since 2016 the amazing teachers David Robson and Jelena Vesić from Ashtanga Yoga Toronto.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is much more than just fancy asana. It’s not all handstands, and legs behind the head. It’s about connecting with your breath – learning to still the mind even in the most challenging of postures. After all, as David Robson says, ‘asana without breath is just shitty gymnastics.’

Join David Robson, assisted by Jelena Vesić for a two week very special European Intensive in Zagreb, Croatia and explore the richness of the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga tradition with an authorised teacher.

This Intensive is designed for practitioners who would like to deepen their knowledge on the many different aspects of Ashtanga Yoga, going beyond asana and alignment. With daily morning self-practice safely guided by David and Jelena, philosophy, theory and technique workshops for Primary and Intermediate Series, and much more, each student  will be able to advance in their practice, regardless of their experience.

For all levels, but best to have at least 6 months of regular practice: everyone with a genuine interest in Ashtanga Yoga is welcome to join this Intensive!

The rich program consists of daily Mysore style practice, and a series of weekend and afternoon workshops.

Intensive Highlights:

  • 10 days of Mysore style self-guided practice
  • Principles of alignment in the Primary Series
  • An overview of the Intermediate Series
  • Traditional Sanskrit count
  • Safe back-bending
  • Safe and effective hands-on adjustments for key poses
  • Arm balances and handstands
  • Jump-backs and jump-throughs

David Robson & Jelena Vesić

gost predavač | Ashtanga Vinyasa teacher

David Robson is the director of the Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Toronto. With 100+ students each morning, he leads one of the world’s largest Mysore programs outside of India. After completing a degree in Comparative Religion, David made his first trip to Mysore, India in 2002, where he initiated studies with his teacher Sharath Jois. Since then he has returned annually to deepen and enrich his practice and teaching, and since 2007 has been an Authorized Level 2 teacher. In addition to running his Mysore program in Toronto, David teaches workshops and retreats around the world, and he has released a popular series of instructional videos on Ashtanga called Learn To Float.

Jelena Vesić made Yoga her sole focus in 2009 after studying ballet for 16 years. She has studied with her teacher, David Robson, since 2010, and is now leading the evening Mysore program at AYCT. She often assists David Robson on workshops and retreats in Toronto and around the world.

Program details

Monday to Friday morning Mysore program will be held at GaiaYoga shala, in three time slots:

5.30am // 7am // 8.30am (not possible to change your time once you have a confirmed slot!)
Please respect your starting and ending practice time, in order to not create queues of other practitioners waiting for their mat space.

We’ll do full two weeks (10 days) of Mysore style self-practice. These Mysore classes are small and friendly (max. 17 people per shift), so you’ll get lots of individual attention from David and Jelena.

We’re asking you to commit at least 1 week/five days minimum, and in return you will get a memorable experience on your path of transformation. You will have the time to get to know David and Jelena and for them to get to know you and your practice.

WEEKEND WORKSHOP
October 12-14, 2018

Pain-Free Backbends
Friday 12th 6:00 to 8:00 pm

Backbends don’t have to hurt! This workshop will explore the basic alignment and actions of Ashtanga’s Primary & Intermediate Series backbends. By learning correct technique for the poses allow your heart to open, and your body to safely go deeper into the postures.

Learn to Float: Graceful Vinyasas
Saturday 13th 10:00 -12:00 pm

Focusing on the vinyasas of the Sun Salutations, and the transitional jumping vinyasas, this session offers detailed techniques, alignment and energetic principles that take us towards graceful, weightless transitions between postures in the practice. This session is useful for students beginning their Ashtanga path, for teachers needing tips and techniques to share with students, and for more experienced practitioners looking to inspire and deepen their practice.

Nadi Shodhana: Key postures of the Intermediate Series
Saturday 13th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm

Ashtanga’s Second Series of postures is designed to cleanse and charge our nervous system. This session will provide an accessible introduction to some of the deeper backbends, hip-openers and arm-balances that make the Intermediate Series such a transformative practice. All levels of practitioners are invited to attend.

Traditional Sanskrit Counted Led Full Primary Series
Sunday 14th 10:00 - 11:30 am

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga for Life: an Overview of the eight-limbed Path
Sunday 14th 1:00 - 2:00 pm

We will discuss and learn about the philosophy, history, theory and technique of the Ashtanga Yoga method as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson R. Sharath Jois in Mysore, India. We will look at the deep connection of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga to the natural cycles; the transformative power of the practice over time, and how the practice is adapted and applied in our daily modern life. We will look at a range of issues, including those important to the female practitioners such as pregnancy/fertility/cycle; practitioners with special needs and injuries; and age.

Jump Back & Jump Through
Sunday 14th 2:00 - 4:00 pm

Jump-backs and jump-throughs are the transitional movements that link Ashtanga's sitting poses together. These vinyasas provide a bridge to carry our focus between asanas, and also build a purifying heat in the body that is said to boil the blood. This workshop will go over the actions and movements of the jump-back and jump-through in close detail, and provide valuable instruction useful for practitioners of all levels.

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS
TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS 5:30 - 7:30 pm

Each Tuesday and Thursday over the two weeks, there will be a 2 hour technical afternoon workshop on technique and method, adjustments and alignments, and any key questions that arise during daily morning self-practice. Practitioners are encouraged to submit questions or topics they see relevant to the workshops.

Tuesday 9th October: Alignments and Adjustments for Primary Series

Take a more detailed look at the alignment, adjustments and basic anatomy of key groups of poses in the Primary Series (forward bends, hip openers and backbends). As a student or a teacher you will develop a better understanding of what to observe in your own or others’ body during practice and energetically experience the state of the asana.

Thursday 11th October: Arm Balances and Handstands

Arm balances show up throughout the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. From the first jump back in the Sun Salutations, the opportunity to balance appears again and again. When we commit to these opportunities to embrace the work of arm balancing, we begin to develop strength and deepen our focus

Tuesday 16th October: Alignments and Adjustments for Intermediate Series

Take a more detailed look at the alignment, adjustments and basic anatomy of key groups of poses (hip openers and backbends) in the Intermediate Series. As a student or a teacher you will develop a better understanding of what to observe in your own or others’ body during practice and energetically experience the state of the asana.

Thursday 18th October: Unique Vinyasas

You know the regular old jump back and jump, but unique vinyasas are the special entries and exits into specific postures. This workshop breaks down the technique on how to do some of the special lifts and jumps that get us in and out of these postures in Ashtanga’s first 3 series. We will also look at the correct method for vinyasas which require entry into the pose/bind on one count only.

Each Tuesday and Thursday over the two weeks, there will be a 2 hour technical afternoon workshop on technique and method, adjustments and alignments and any key questions that arise during daily morning self-practice. Practitioners are encouraged to submit questions or topics they see relevant to the workshops.
